North East firms in line for top property accolade

Four North East buildings and property schemes are set to go head-to-head with other property projects from all over the world having made it to the shortlist of the national RICS Awards Grand Final 2009.

The annual property awards celebrate unique initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment.

There are four categories in the final - Building Conservation, Community Benefit, Regeneration and Sustainability - and the shortlisted entries from the North East are Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema, Sacriston Surgery in Durham, Middlesbrough College and the Zebra Project, an office development at Alnwick, Northumberland.

They won the regional heats - the RICS North East Renaissance Awards - which took place in April in Newcastle.

The award ceremony will be hosted by Kevin McCloud, of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, in London on Friday 16 October.

David Coulson, chair of the RICS North East regional Board, said: “I’m thrilled that four North East buildings have made it to the short list of the RICS Awards 2009 as they really are inspirational projects that deserve recognition. They are a credit to the region and illustrate the skilful work that chartered surveyors and property professionals in the area have undertaken and completed.

“There are some truly remarkable projects from all over the world on the grand final short list. So our inclusion on the short list really puts the North East on the map as an area that offers world-class, innovative buildings. The RICS Awards 2009 ultimately provide an ideal opportunity for the region to showcase and celebrate its impressive property projects on a global stage. I wish all four of them the best of luck.”
