Tyneside gets top medical conferences
Newcastle will be welcoming a host of high profile medical and science conferences this month, with more than 800 delegates expected from all over the world.
The five conferences all take place at Newcastle and Northumbria universities and aim to highlight the medical and scientific expertise that exists in the North East, while hoping to raise a £950,000 injection into the region.
Ambassadors from local businesses and learning institutions have spearheaded the bid and are hopeful that this will help establish Newcastle and Gateshead as major conference centres for business, medicine and science.
Dr Andreas Werner, Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences, Newcastle University, said: “We have the credentials here to attract delegates from all over the world.
“World class scientists will be coming to Newcastle and Gateshead with a Nobel Prize winner amongst them. The fact that all these attendees will directly experience the welcome, vibrancy and beauty of this place will provide a lasting legacy.”
Between 9 and 11 September, the Society for Social Medicine Annual Scientific Meeting will be taking place at Newcastle University where the latest health service issues and public health research will be debated.
Newcastle University’s Professor Martin White, Chair for the meeting, said: “The conference not only explores the latest health service and public health research, but will also have strong emphasis on sustainable conferencing.
“The organisation supports a carbon-friendly approach by encouraging delegates to choose public transport and also through the design of a menu which sources local produce to minimise food miles.”
