North East employers report positive hiring prospects
North East employers are reporting improved hiring sentiment for the first time since the start of the year, according to survey results released today.
The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey shows a significant rise in projected hiring intentions for the region between October and December 2009. The survey’s results show that employer hiring confidence for the next quarter is higher in the North East than in any other UK region.
Amanda White, Manpower’s Operations Manager for the North East, said: “North East employers are starting to report an uplift in confidence, although it is still too soon to say whether the worst is over or if these first signs of buoyancy are here to stay. As a business, we’re currently seeing the greatest demand for staff in back office and support roles – particularly within the public sector – as well as some new job creation within manufacturing.”
Manpower believe that the region’s existing technical and niche skills are already starting to be used in different ways.
Amanda adds: “The North East has all the ingredients to reinvent itself and, having done so during previous downturns, is in a better position than many other areas of the UK. For job seekers, undertaking additional training and taking temporary roles – which will enable them to stay in employment, learn new skills, and gain exposure to different industry sectors – will be crucial to boosting employability as competition for each available role remains high.”
