Design Event celebrates politics and play
The North East’s annual design festival celebrates its fifth birthday in October, and this year focuses on the themes of politics and play.
Design Event, will feature 25 exhibitions, talks, tours and events over a 10-day period across the whole of the North East.
This year, with news of a recession, credit crunch and MP scandals all around, DE09 will explore the theme of politics and as 2009 is Design Event’s 5th birthday, the organisers have also included play in the theme.
Highlights from the festival will include a Doing It for the Kids exhibition of sustainable children’s toys and The Uses of Intelligence, which will explore the tools of spying.
Design Event director Karen Stone said: “For 2009 we are pushing the boundaries and continuing to celebrate creativity and innovation across design, with the theme of politics and play.
“We decided on politics and play, as design has been integral to political activity for many years including iconic graphics used in propaganda materials for numerous political movements and in terms of play, more often than not design inspired by play inspires true creativity and brings a new prospective that can make us smile.
“So whether your interests lie in politics or play I’m sure there will be something to suit each of us at this year’s most thought provoking Design Event festival yet.”
