US research firm lands in North East
The North East has attracted a world-leading Life Sciences research company to the region who are set to expand their operations throughout Europe.
Protein Forest, a US based firm who specialise in Proteomics, is to take advantage of a growing industry and is keen to tap into the North East’s expertise in the field.
The European division will be headquartered in Newcastle and will support sales, product demonstrations and various business projects with customers throughout the continent.
Dr. Glen Kemp, Programme Manager of Newcastle firm NEPAF, who the company are working closely with, said: “The UK is a market leader in Proteomics, and there aren’t many facilities in the world that can rival the equipment and expertise here in Newcastle.
“Protein Forest’s technology will be a great asset for us, it compliments the capabilities at the NEPAF facilities, and the partnership is already creating new opportunities for us.”
Proteomics is the study of protein structures and interactions and builds on the discovery of DNA for the health and green energy sectors and Protein Forest will initially employ two people in the North East and plans to bring additional research contracts to the region.
Andrew Elwick, of One North East’s Inward Investment and Aftercare team, added: “International companies are increasingly attracted to the region by the world-class science and innovation occurring in fields like Life Sciences here in North East England.”
The global market for Proteomics was worth $6.7b last year and it’s estimated the industry could be worth almost $20b by 2014.
