Sunderland communities to share £12m pot
Sunderland will benefit from a share in £12 million of Government cash, and it is hoped it will help those parts of the city left behind in the race for housing and jobs.
The share will also support families who feel isolated or under pressure because of the recession.
Castletown, Red House and Southwick will be among the first areas to benefit from the money, which will be used to develop a range of community projects.
Sunderland City Council leader Paul Watson said: “Funding such as this and the schemes it will enable us to deliver are fundamental to building sustainable and cohesive communities.”
Communities Secretary John Denham said: “We will make it clear that the Government is committed to making sure, in every community, in every corner of this country, people know we are on their side.
“No favours. No privileges. No special interest groups. Just fairness.”
“In recent years substantial investment has transformed large parts of the country. But this investment has taken place against a background of wider changes which has left some communities feeling under pressure.”
Sunderland is among 27 areas sharing the £12million.
