New Year’s Eve carnival hits the streets of Newcastle
More than 10,000 people are expected to ring in the New Year in Newcastle City Centre as a special carnival event is organised to mark the arrival of 2010.
culture10 at NewcastleGateshead Initiative,in partnership with Newcastle City Council, are organising the New Year’s Eve Winter****Carnival, which will take place from 2pm on 31 December.
150 local people will take part in the event, said to be inspired by North East, South American and South East Asian celebrations. Floats, musicians and dancers will parade through the centre of the city, from Grey’s Monument to Haymarket, led by three Carnival Queens.
The day will end with an early evening firework display at Newcastle Civic Centre at 6pm.
National outdoor arts company Walk the Plank have been commissioned to develop the carnival, after their work with the council and culture10 on previous New Year’s Eve events.
The Carnival queens and their entourage will start from Monument, moving along Northumberland Street and John Dobson Street to the Civic Centre, and a series of events will take place on the hour, every hour throughout the afternoon in key locations across the city centre prior to the parade and fireworks.
