Tesco could create 400 jobs with new store
Supermarket giant Tesco has applied for a new 80,000ft Tesco Extra to Durham County Council.
The proposals for the new store in Burnhope Way, Peterlee, have received “overwhelmingly positive” feedback after consultation with 200 people saw 99% of respondants in favour of a new store.
The multi-million pound investment will be one of the biggest in Peterlee’s history, as well as creating 400 jobs.
Doug Wilson, Tesco’s corporate affairs manager, said: “The public exhibition was the culmination of the pre-planning consultation process.
“We have been extremely encouraged by the very positive response to our proposal.”
The store will be part of a new generation of Eco-stores, designed to dramatically reduce Tesco’s carbon output.
On job creation, Mr Wilson said: “Training courses range from basic retail skills through to graduate and management schemes.
“Peterlee, like many towns in the country, has been badly affected by the recession so we are confident this news will be warmly welcomed.”
