Shop Direct response group forms
The first meeting of the response group set up to help the 900 workers affected by last week’s Shop Direct announcement takes place in Sunderland this Friday.
It will bring together a number of public sector partners including Sunderland City Council, JobCentre Plus, One North East, the Learning and Skills Council and the North East Chamber of Commerce to look at what help and support can be put in place to help Shop Direct employees should they be made redundant at the end of the 90-day consultation period.
The response group will be chaired by Janet Johnson, the Deputy Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council.
A number of companies in the contact centre sector have already been in touch following last week’s announcement of the consultation period with staff.
Councillor Paul Watson, the Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “We’ve already been contacted by a number of companies in the same sector following last week’s announcement, which is a really positive development, and we’ll be looking to do everything we can to offer as much help and support as possible to the Shop Direct employees.”
