Chairman swaps beer for cider
A former chairman of brewing giant Scottish & Newcastle has been appointed to the helm of Irish cider maker C&C where he will join three other ex-S&N execs.
Sir Brian Stewart joins the group, which makes Magners cider, alongside CEO John Dunsmore, who was head at Edinburgh-based S&N when it was sold to Carlsberg and Heineken.
Sir Brian oversaw S&N’s expansion into France, India and China and the takeover of of Finnish brewer Baltika along with Carlsberg.
Driven by the globally-popular Newcastle Brown Ale, S&N was once one of Tyneside’s biggest employers until the closure of its Newcastle plant on the site which is now home to Newcastle Science City.
Recent years have seen some staff retained in the region at the Federation Brewery in Gateshead where Brown Ale will be made until the middle of this year.
