Zavvi to become Peacocks
Work has begun to re-fit one of Tyneside’s most prominent retail sites which has been empty for over a year since the recession ravaged the UK High Street.
The former Zavvi music and entertainment store on the Northumberland Street front of Newcastle’s Monument Mall has been taken over by menswear chain Peacocks.
The new tenants at the site, which was formerly Virgin Megastore before being re-branded as Zavvi, will re-open it in July following the recruitment process for several new positions.
Zavvi became one of the High Street’s biggest casualties after the collapse Woolworths during the economic downturn when it fell into administration in December 2008, with the loss of 3,400 jobs.
