New investment brings new jobs
A waste management firm has invested £4m in expanding its new plant, creating 25 North East jobs in the process.
Sunderland-based Alex Smiles had taken its 90-strong workforce well beyond the 100 mark following the investment into its materials recycling facility in Deptford.
Company representative Gill Usher said: “In the market that we are currently in, we are very proud to be able do this. Furthermore, the vast majority of the people who are employed within the new facility are from the local area, which is also good news.”
The group has also made a commitment with the Skills Council to ensure that the new employees are trained to a specific standard for their long-term benefit.
She said: “These individuals were sometimes long term unemployed and are now employed, so we hope to give them the skills required to keep them employed.”
The company, which has been in business for three decades, has increased the level of waste it recycles for the construction industry from 50% to over 90% in recent years.
This has helped to keep more waste away from landfill sites, as a result saving money for its clients and protecting the sustainability of the environment.
