Toy cars drive the world’s investors to Teesside
A Teesside toy auctioneer is bracing itself for an internet bidding frenzy as it prepares to sell the UK’s largest rare toy car collection.
Horace Dunkley, from Stamford, Lincolnshire, is putting over 2,000 vintage Matchbox Models of Yesteryear up for sale, and experts predict the collection will fetch up to £100,000 at the auction hosted by Thornaby-based Vectis tomorrow.
Mr. Dunkley began collecting the models in 1975 and has decided to sell up after making a promise to his wife.
He said: “I must admit that for a long time I have often thought I would really like to see what would happen to my collection at auction.
“I made a promise to my wife Jen that I would stop being an author at 65, and spend the next year cataloguing my collection ready for auction.
“It really was the right time to hand over the stewardship of these delightful models to someone else who will give them a good home.”
The collection will go under the hammer tomorrow and Thursday in Thornaby, Stockton on Tees.
Vectis Auctions is the largest toy auctioneer in the world selling Dinky, Corgi, Hornby, Scalextrix and many other collectables.
