Green vehicles giants park up in the region
The biggest names in the low carbon vehicle industry are in North East today for the UK’s first Green Vehicle Congress.
This major industry event is taking place from today at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead and comes just a week after Nissan announced it will manufacture the electric Nissan LEAF at its Sunderland plant.
The Green Vehicle Congress has been organised by Cenex, the UK’s centre of excellence for low carbon and fuel cell technologies,
UK Trade and Investment and regional development agency One North East. It is anticipated that this event will be held annually at a different location each year and will become the sister event to the Cenex national Low Carbon Vehicle Event.
International manufacturers and suppliers will be at the event, with visitors arriving from Australia, China, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia and the USA to engage with UK companies in workshops, sessions and seminars.
The theme of the event is ‘Engaging the global motor industry supply chain in low carbon road transportation’. There will be five main seminar sessions throughout Wednesday and Thursday, led by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), the Technology Strategy Board, Cenex, One North East and the Energy Technologies Institute.
A range of low carbon vehicles will be on display in Baltic Square, from manufacturers including Mitsubishi, Citroen, Smart, Smith Electric Vehicles, Powerbyke and Elecscoot. Experts from University of Sunderland’s Institute of Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP) will also be exhibiting a Nissan Almera which they have adapted to run on hydrogen.
Margaret Fay, Chairman of One North East, said: “We are delighted to be hosting this prestigious event and welcoming global industry figures to North East England.”
