NBS plants its flag
Newcastle Building Society (NBS) will today look to strengthen its North East roots – and breathe new life into the High Street – with the launch of a new flagship store.
In the week that part of Northern Rock was earmarked for a merger with a Yorkshire firm, Tyneside’s second most famous financial institution will today plant its flag in one of Newcastle’s busiest areas as it cements its position as one of the region’s fastest-growing brands.
One of NBS’s oldest customers -102-year-old Daniel White - and a Newcastle United legend will be among those at the opening of the new city centre flagship branch on Northumberland Street.
Mr White, who has been a Society customer for more than 20 years, will be assisted in his duties at the opening event by legendary former Newcastle United captain Bob Moncur.
The new flagship branch covers more than 2,000 sq ft over two floors, and offers customers direct access to a larger branch with more staff and financial advisers than any other of its 35 current branches in the UK and Gibraltar.
Chief executive Jim Willens said: “Our new flagship branch provides the presence on our home city’s main shopping street that we’ve long aimed for.
“Our branches remain central to the support we provide to our members. The investment we’ve made in these impressive new premises demonstrates both the importance we place on having this strong flagship branch presence in the city, and the confidence we have in the Newcastle as an independent mutual organisation.”
