Bright lights shine on Berwick
After the unprecedented achievements of previous events, an international festival is set to return to one of the region’s most historic towns.
Forming an integral part of the visual arts calendar, the Berwick Film and Media Arts festival will descend on the border for five days of contemporary film and video in September.
The festival will consist of a series of national and international feature films, artist videos and installations, set against the backdrop of the town’s Elizabethan walls and bridges.
Festival director, Melanie Iredale, has called on North East filmmakers to get involved and has predicted the latest edition of the festival will prove to be the best yet.
She said: “We’d love to receive films and videos from filmmakers and artists living and working in the North East.
“This festival really does capture the imagination of those living in the region and attracts cineastes and art lovers from all over the country. It illuminates the whole town.”
Organisers anticipate that the 2010 festival will attract audiences of up to 10,000 people and will welcome internationally renowned filmmakers and artists to the gathering.
Ms. Iredale added: “People like the idea of coming to the point where England and Scotland meet.
“It’s certainly a unique festival and we’re looking forward to drawing together artists’ film and video practice alongside the work of independent filmmakers.”
Since the opening event in 2005, the Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival has shown over 280 individual works from 32 countries in 18 different locations across the town.
This has included a number of commissioned pieces, 1 international premiere and 20 UK and European debuts.
