Sweet makers not so sweet on pay plans

Nestle workers throughout Britain, including those at the confectioner’s Newcastle plant, are reportedly being balloted for industrial action in a row over a pay freeze.

Members of the Unite, GMB and Usdaw unions are taking part in a postal “straw poll” asking them to consider a further ballot to begin a process of industrial action.

Nestle bosses rejected a claim for a 2.5% increase saying it would be irresponsible to raise wages in “tough times”.

Union spokesperson John Kirk said that workers had submitted a “reasonable pay claim” after accepting pay freezes in 2007 and 2008.

The current ballot will close on 23 April.
