Crooner heads to South Tyneside
A global superstar is asking the way to South Tyneside after being confirmed as a headlining act at the summer festival.
Tony Christie - made famous after Peter Kay’s take on his 1970’s song,Amarillo – will take the stage in Bents Park this July along with members of some of the baddest boys in modern rock history.
The three-month summer festival will take place in venues across South Shields and will feature live music at the Amphitheatre on the sea front from June.
The performances, which are held Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the month, will once again show a mix of international, national and local artists, including members of Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Wishbone Ash and Thunder.
Regular brass band concerts have also been announced at the Amphitheatre throughout the duration of the festival.
Youngsters from across the North East are being catered for with the return of Tommy’s Parties on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout August.
Tony Christie had two Top Twenty hits in the UK Singles Chart in 1971 with ‘I Did What I Did For Maria’, which reached number 2, and ‘Is This The Way To Amarillo’, which peaked at number 18.
The latter track sold over one million copies by September 1972, and was awarded a gold disc.
