Region’s artists cooking up a storm
THE REGION’S ARTISTS and creatives are to be celebrated this summer as part of the Cookson Parade in South Tyneside.
The annual showcase – part of the South Tyneside Summer Festival - will move through the streets of South Shields on Saturday, July 3, paying homage to the region’s culture as part of the 100th birthday celebrations for the town hall.
In the run up to the event organisers will be holding several workshops for participants in partnership with Worldbeaters Music, where artists will be on hand to help bring even the wildest ideas for props and costumes to colourful life.
The first design and ideas workshop will be held on Saturday, 8 May with a building session following on May 22.
Both events are designed specifically for group leaders who can pass on what they have learnt to the rest of their group and will be run by expert carnival maker Barbara Agar who has already worked on large-scale carnivals in the UK, Europe and China.
There will also be a series of dance workshops running throughout May and June – hosted by carnival dancer Leonardo Africano - where parade participants can hone their dancing skills in time to strut their stuff through the streets of South Shields.
