New art gallery launched at Hoults
A CREATIVE business hub that is home to 400 media professionals has launched an onsite art gallery.
Newcastle’s Hoults Yard, which lists video games firm Mere Mortals, regional screen agency Northern Film & Media and marketing company onebestway among its residents, has opened Think Tank – a permanent art exhibition space.
Hoults, which was formerly home to the Tyneside Pottery Malings and has been under the ownership of the Hoult family for generations, has seen a dramatic transformation from industrial estate to artistic hub in recent years.
The first in a series of revolving tenants in the exhibition space is Globe Gallery, known for its work with established and emerging artists.
It will inhabit the space until the end of this month as part of its ‘Globe Gallery Offsite’ programme, which aims to breathe creativity into empty spaces across the region.
Hoults Yard managing director Charlie Hoult said: “We’ve been running a sustained cultural programme here on the yard, including music, performance art and tech networking, so a permanent exhibition area seemed like the next logical step.
“It’s been fantastic to welcome Globe Gallery onto the site and to welcome 300 guests on opening night.
“Internationally renowned artist Andrew Burton was the first to be inspired by the Think Tank space, where his ‘Tholos’ sculpture responds to the industrial feel of the room, and features thousands of hand produced miniature clay bricks.
His work, which was assembled over several weeks by a team of volunteers, is joined by pieces from Mike Collier, the man behind the Tyne International Festival.
His ‘Six Birds of the Coquet Valley’ is a series of prints which explores the interrelated nature of ecological and cultural ideas, with a limited edition print being launched for this event to accompany the steadily growing works commissioned by Globe.
All of these works, available to browse, purchase and experience from Globe’s Plan Chests while at Think Tank, join a broad range of artists who have worked with the gallery over the past 16 years.
