Medicinal pick-me-up for the economy
THE regional economy will benefit from a £553,000 boost this week as more than 600 medical professionals from across the world head to Tyneside.
The Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association (OAA) is holding its international convention at The Sage Gateshead with discussion and debate focussing on the safety of mother and baby during pregnancy.
Seminars and presentations will explore issues on the prevention of accidental harm from anaesthetic drug overdose and challenges faced by mothers in sub-Saharan Africa.
According to the NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, the conference will injest £553,000 into the local economy as it comprises a full social programme, including tours of Durham Cathedral and Hadrian’s Wall.
Tim Meek, consultant anaesthetist at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and local organiser for the conference, said: “It is wonderful to have delegates converge on North East England from all over the world to hear from our local and international speakers about real improvements in patient care that we can all make.
“The work of the OAA impacts positively on the care of mothers and babies around the world.”
