Obama praises North East endeavour
THE most powerful man on the planet has taken time out from tackling oil spills and vying to revive the US economy to praise the good work of a North East firm, as Myah Bale reports.
US President Barack Obama visited the North American headquarters of North East manufacturing giant Smith Electric Vehicles in Kansas City, Missouri.
The President met staff and their families and took a tour to see some of the battery-powered trucks that are in manufacture. During the visit Barack Obama took care to emphasize the substantial contribution that Smith Electric Vehicles has made towards the rebuilding of the economy.
“The reason I’m here today is because, at this plant, you’re doing more than just building new vehicles. You are helping to fight our way through a vicious recession and you are building the economy of America’s future,” he said.
“This is how we take charge of our destiny. This is how we create jobs and lasting growth. This is how we ensure that America not only recovers, but prospers - that this nation leads in the industries of the future.” Smith supplies vehicles to a growing list of corporations including AT&T, Frito-Lay, Coca-Cola, Staples and Pacific Gas & Electric.
