Steelmaker hopes to bring new plant to Teesside
CORUS has announced plans to build a £31.5m manufacturing plant on Teesside creating an expected 220 jobs for the region.
Preliminary work is said to be under way in Redcar for the development of a new facility to produce wind turbines.
The massive steel structures, weighing up to 650 tonnes, are used to secure offshore wind turbines to the seabed and will now be produced at the redundant buildings located on the 3,000-acre site.
It is hoped that the move will create more than 200 jobs at the site of the plant, which was partially mothballed with the loss of 1,600 jobs in February.
The company’s products director, Jon Bolton, said: “The development of a new plant is dependent on us securing enough orders for monopiles.
“Our engineers will be carrying out work in Teesside over the coming weeks to give us a head start on creating a new facility.”
