Entrepreneur eyes success by keeping it in the family
A DARLINGTON businessman is celebrating the expansion of his company by stepping down from his role and handing the business to his son.
After almost twenty years’ working together, Maurice Towers will place VIP Electricals in the capable hands of his son, Darren, who has worked with him since the business first started in 1992.
VIP Electrical, which recently provided a light installation for Channel 4 national television, offers a wide and varied range of services from major installations and refurbishments to general maintenance and electrical inspections to both private residential homes and an array of commercial properties, including shops, hotels, restaurants and churches and factories.
Darren Towers, who was just 23 when the father-and-son business started, said: “I’m lucky to have worked with my father.
We’ve always had a good father-and-son relationship and it’s been great working with him. “There have been some tough times in the construction industry and trades have suffered but we are emerging strong and will hopefully continue to grow.”
In fact, VIP Electrical is growing so much; it’s recently recruited three more employees to its six-strong team of electricians.
VIP Electrical, who has always been based in Darlington, has recently moved to larger premises on Smithy Lane in Darlington to accommodate for the three new recruits. Apprentices, Morgan Harrison and Gary Close will be given the valuable opportunity to learn their trade from VIP Electricals’ experienced, time served electricians, whilst Claire Millholland will be in charge of marketing and administration.
VIP Electrical prides itself on customer service, high quality and efficient services at a competitive rate and Maurice is confident that the business will move from strength to strength under the management of his son.
“I’m very enthusiastic about the handover” said Maurice. “Darren is an excellent tradesman. He is methodical and loves the business and has always taken a lot of pride in his work. He will be a great manager.”
