North East construction giants share Metro contract
TWO INFRASTRUCTURE giants – which have bases in the North East - have been selected to carry out £25m-worth of embankment and structures work on the Tyne & Wear metro.
Balfour Beatty and BAM Nuttall will carry out refurbishment and replacement works to bridges, retaining walls, culverts, earthworks and drainage.
The deal is reportedly worth £8.3m to each contractor.
The deal is one of nine lots tendered this year by the Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive, as part of its £100m Asset Renewal Plan.
Balfour Beatty has an office in Middlesbrough and has previously worked on Stockton’s iconic Infinity Bridge.
It employs 50,000 staff and carries out construction work throughout Europe, the US, Australia and the Middle East.
BAM Nuttall, which has an office on the banks of the Tyne, has been involved in enabling works for the 2012 Olympics, the upgrade of Neasden Depot on the London Underground network and in the construction of the Lakeside Energy from Waste Plant in Colnbrook.
