Nuclear jobs blow for Cumbria
OVER 1,500 jobs are to be lost at Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria due to cuts in spending on the site.
The job losses are at Sellafield Limited, the company which leases the site from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and works on a contract from NDA.
The firm is controlled by Nuclear Management Partners which is made up of Areva (France), Amec (UK) and URS Washington (USA).
Sellafield Limited has to date accepted that 579 workers in site licenced jobs will be able to leave with voluntary redundancy between now and end December.
The company will also lay off over 300 agency staff on site and will not move to fill 650 vacancies for jobs on the site.
The job losses will impact on all grades including operating staff, administrative workers, professional and technical staff and management posts. After the job losses direct employment on the site will be reduced to over 9,000 jobs.
Steve Gibbons, GMB regional officer said “GMB’s fears on job losses at Sellafield have now come to pass with these 1,500 job losses. Spending cuts have led to the scope of work to be done being reduced and has given rise to these job losses.”
