Bus firm goes green
REGIONAL bus operator, Stagecoach North East is to invest £5m in a fleet of greener hybrid electric buses for Newcastle.
It follows the award of £2.2m in support funding from the Government’s Green Bus Fund, one the most successful bids outside London.
The government funding brings the total investment in the fleet to £7.2m and the 26 new Enviro400H Euro5 buses will operate on the 39/40 routes, covering key local areas including Wallsend, Walker, Byker, the City Centre, West Road, Chapel House and Dumpling Hall.
The fleet of double-decker buses, which have with 30 per cent less carbon emissions than standard vehicles, will be manufactured and go into service in 2011.
The announcement follows the introduction by Stagecoach Group this summer of the UK’s biggest fleet of hybrid electric vehicles.
