Alive after five
RETAIL outlets in Newcastle extended their opening hours yesterday in a bid to provide a multi-million pound injection into city centre business.
From 5pm yesterday, outlets extended their opening hours to 8pm weekdays and 7pm on Saturdays.
Free car parking in the Council’s 8 multi-storey car parks across the city is also in place and a host of events and activities have been launched as part of the ‘Alive after Five’ programme.
A line up of street entertainers and performance artistes has been developed to support Alive after Five which will run until 1 April 2011.
To launch and celebrate the transformation of the city centre, a whole host of carnival style activities was hosted at Newcastle’s Grey’s Monument last night.
Newcastle’s own, 20-strong drumming band, Newcastle’s All Stars performed with international street performers, Calvos Dos, stilt walkers and jugglers joined by fire eating.
