Gateshead Hilton invests in £500k revamp
GATESHEAD’S Hilton hotel has unveiled an extensive £500k revamp in a bid to capitalise on the region’s 9% surge in visitor numbers.
The renovation of 71 bedrooms took place over eight months with further restoration of the remaining rooms planned over the course of 2011-2012.
The decision comes on the back of recent figures showing that visitors to the region have increased by 9 percent since 2003.
General manager Guy Hilton said: “The North East’s tourism economy grew by £117m in 2009 owing to the fantastic culture, history and leisure opportunities the region has to offer.
“Since Hilton Newcastle Gateshead launched in 2004, we have seen a requirement for more high end accommodation and as a result of this, made the decision to invest in our facilities.”
Hotel occupancy figures last week revealed a strong growth in the demand across Newcastle and Gateshead.
In June, July and August, statistics show that 78% of hotel rooms were occupied in Newcastle city centre and quayside locations.
In addition, September 2010 saw 83% of the city centre and quayside hotel rooms occupied – the highest September occupancy rate for five years, a boosthelped by the influx of visitors taking part in the 30th Great North Run.
