CBI names £310,000-a-year boss

THE deputy director general of the CBI has been named as the business group’s new leader.

John Cridlandwill has reportedly take over the £310,000-a-year post of director general at the end of January when Richard Lambert steps down after five years in the job.

Business secretary Vince Cable welcomed the appointment.

Mr Cridland told the BBC he was taking the role at a time that was “critical” for business.

“No one thinks that securing the UK’s economic future will be easy, but business people across the country are rolling up their sleeves and getting on with the job,” he added.

Former CBI director general Lord Jones said that Mr Cridland’s “knowledge, experience, popularity, contacts and prodigious hard work and application to the task will make an enormous contribution to the country in the hard years ahead”.

The CBI says it represents about 240,000 businesses which together employ about a third of the private sector workforce.

Some economists estimate that spending cuts announced by the coalition government will lead to the loss of almost one million jobs across the public and private sectors.
