£1.5 million project to boost Seaton Carew sea defences gets underway
A £1.5m project to boost sea defences in a Teesside coastal town is due to get under way.
The work, in Seaton Carew, involves placing rock armour in front of the 1,640ft (500m) length of the sea wall.
It also includes raising the level of the North Shelter area to that of the rest of the promenade, landscaping it, and building a new 262ft (80m) wall.
Beginning on Monday, the project, funded by the Environment Agency, will take six months to complete.
Councillor Robbie Payne, Hartlepool Council’s cabinet member for finance and procurement, said: “The threat of rising sea levels and coastal erosion along Britain’s coastline cannot be underestimated and Hartlepool is no exception.
“I am exceptionally pleased to see the start of these improvements, which form part of the wider ongoing sea defence strategy for Hartlepool’s coastline and which have been developed after extensive research and public consultation.”
