Tony Blair promotes regional sport
In the build up to the Olympic games next year, Tony Blair is attempting to preserve the regions sporting legacy through a new ‘Coaches for Clubs’ campaign.
The Tony Blair Sports foundation is joining forces with schools and sports clubs across the region to encourage people to become volunteers, coaches and officials in the communities where they are most needed.
Mr Blair said: “The great thing about this campaign is that it gives young people an opportunity to get involved in sport, young people who otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance.”
He also visited a number of sports clubs across the region on Friday, including Benfield School. Which is set to be the host of the UK’s largest ever multi-sports schools event, the School 500 Games.
Blair spoke to young people, council representatives and volunteers about the event, and the key role they will play in supporting the event.
Mr Blair added: “This is all about the inspiration to take up sport, to inspire other sot do so and the inspiration that actually was behind the very reason we decided to bid for the Olympics.
“And that’s why I set up the Sports Foundation four years ago. I want that sporting legacy to benefit the North East.”
