British Gas fined £2.5m
British Gas has received a fine of £2.5million from the energy regulator Ofgem, after failing to deal with customer complaints properly- -the biggest fine an energy company has ever received for this problem
The BBC reported that Ofgem’s decision has highlighted basic failures in British Gas’ customer service, including their failure to reopen unresolved complaints, and the absence of a proper complaints procedure for small businesses.
This ruling indicates Ofgem’s desire to reform the energy market for small businesses and private customers, and that they will be taking “a tough approach to enforcement.”
Npower and EDF Energy are also being investigated for the way they handle complaints, while Scotch Power, Scottish and Southern Energy, EDF Energy and Npower will be looked at for mis-selling.
Scottish Power is also being looked at for potentially misleading marketing, as well as differences between the company’s credit and direct debit tariffs.
