Number of unemployed graduates on the rise
The number of unemployed graduates are increasing, according to new Higher Education Statistics.
The BBC reports that around 28 percent of graduates who left university in 2007 are still looking for full time work. While 21 percent were working part time or studying, 3.5 percent gave a response of ‘other’.
This means that 3.5 percent were considered unemployed, and increase on the 2.6 percent who gave this response in 2005.
Of those who were in employment, male graduates were likely to be earning more than female ones. The figures also suggested that over a fifth of graduates did not believe that university had adequately prepared them for a career, while 6.4 percent said it had not prepared them at all,
More than ten percent did not believe their course was good value for money.
The general secretary of the University and College Union commented: “While it is encouraging that the majority of the class of 2007 recognise the value and worth of their degree, it is worrying that the number of unemployed graduates has risen.”
