Businesses unaware of potential cost of employment tribunals
Too many businesses are unaware of the full effects an employment tribunal could have on them, according to employment law specialists Bibby Consulting & Support.
Many are concerned with the potential costs incurred if they lose, although the tribunal has powers to demand changes in business processes and policies as well.
Michael Slade, Managing Director of Bibby CAS stated that businesses need to be aware of the specific recommendations that a tribunal can impose.
He said: “Our recommendation would always be that companies engage HR professionals and have equality and diversity policies in place from day one, but for those who don’t such pronouncements can come as a severe shock.
“Whilst we would not disagree with the recommendations made, putting them all into place and within a short period of time can indeed have a significant and detrimental effect on an organisation’s existing resources.
Mr Slade went on to suggest that companies should act now in reviewing their own policies and procedures, and prepare themselves for coming changes to employment law in October 2011.
