Royals celebrate 175 years of Newcastle’s Theatre Royal

Newcastle Theatre Royal is celebrating its 175th anniversary today, with The Duke of York and Princess Eugenie of York launching festivities.

The Royals will visit the historic theatre to view the results of last year’s £4.75m restoration, and the craftsmen who worked on it.

Their visit follows a long association with royalty, as Prince Andrew’s ancestor George III granted her Royal Licence in 1787.

Philip Bernays, chief executive of the Theatre Royal, said: “It is a great honour to have The Duke and Princess here, and their presence is the perfect start to what promises to be a spectacular weekend of Birthday festivities.

“It feels very appropriate to have our beautiful Theatre Royal royally blessed on this special occasion.”

The Duke of York and Princess Eugenie will be given a tour of the Theatre’s education and outreach facilities and a briefing on current projects from head of learning, Teresa Threadgall, as well as meeting Theatre donors and supporters.
