Fruit and veg to your door

Here at the Daisy Green office we couldn’t wait to try a selection of wholesome fruit and veg from a local supplier.

The Vegbox Company was created by husband and wife David and Laura Roberts. Are they farmers? Do they have an allotment? No!

They are a joiner and teacher by trade and the business was born through their distaste of buying unsatisfying fruit and vegetables that seemed to go off within days.

David and Laura wanted to buy their products from source so went straight to the fruit and vegetable market very early on a Saturday morning. They then saw that other people would like the opportunity to do this too.

The couple are based in Bedlington, Northumberland and now have rounds that stretch from Amble to Chester–Le-Street, during which they deliver fresh salad bags and fruit bags alongside fruit and veg boxes.

They also supply free-range eggs and local Northern food including chutneys, cakes and biscuits. The Daisy team met David when he dropped off the low carb and seasonal box of goodies to our Gateshead office.

We were delighted with the fresh and tasty produce: potatoes, turnip, carrots, mushrooms, peppers, parsnip, onions, garlic and butternut squash. The whole team was thrilled, and there was a buzz in the office at the thought of what we could make with them.

The turnip was enormous and could feed a family for a week; in fact it did!

The Veg Box Company provides a good service with the added benefits of no tie ins so you can try and buy and not over commit if it’s not for you or if you actually need more or less than your chosen bag/box offers.

The couple worked with the Go Wansbeck enterprise team who provided advice on marketing, planning, advertising and finance, to launch the business.

Keep an eye out for the butternut squash recipe I used which we’ll publish very soon.
