tadea's helping organisations gear up for legislative change

Billingham-based sustainability organisation tadea is helping organisations across the region to stay within the law ahead of a legislative change set to take effect early next year.

In January 2013, the law outlining the size of public buildings which require Display Energy Certificates (DECs) will change, reducing the threshold from those buildings with floor areas of more than 1,000m² to also include those with a gross internal area upwards of 500m² –significantly increasing the number of buildings which will require a DEC.

tadea, an accredited Display Energy Certificate provider, is working across the region to help organisations ensure that they stay within the law and avoid any fines imposed for non-compliance: financial penalties currently stand at £500 for failure to display a DEC and £1,000 for failure to obtain the accompanying Advisory Report.

The DEC legislation applies only to buildings that are occupied or part-occupied by a public authority or an institution, that provide a public service, and which are regularly frequented by large numbers of people.

David Morgan is tadea’s Commercial Manager. He says:

“This legislative change is fast approaching and we want to help make sure that organisations across the region are aware of what’s happening. It’s important for them to be kept up to date if they are to be fully prepared and ready to hit the ground running next year.

“We’re finding that many people in the organisations which will be affected by the law change know absolutely nothing about it – even for those who do know that a change is on the horizon, many are confused as to if, and how, their organisations will be affected.

“tadea are here to cut through the confusion and to help organisations with what is, at the end of the day, a legal compliance issue. By acting now, they can stay ahead of the game and make sure they don’t fall foul of the law when the change comes in.”
