Top TripAdvisor spots for Northumberland tourist attractions

The Vindolanda Museum and the Roman Army Museum on Hadrian’s Wall are the top two tourist attractions to visit in Hexham, according to the travel website, TripAdvisor.com.

Both attractions have received excellent reviews on the website, which assists customers in gathering travel information, posting reviews and engaging in interactive travel forums, ranking them #1 and #2 in the category for things to do in Hexham - http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attractions-g186351-Activities-Hexham_Northumberland_England.html

Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum have been ranked against 11 attractions in Hexham, including Hexham Abbey and the Border History Museum. Out of 236 reviews Vindolanda has achieved 183 excellent reviews and 39 very good. Whilst out of 83 reviews the Roman Army Museum received 51 excellent reviews and 25 very good.

Many of the recent reviews have been made over the Christmas period. This winter Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum, opened their doors for the first time so that visitors to the area and in the region can enjoy discovering more about how the Roman’s lived on the Edge of Empire.

Patricia Birley, director of the Vindolanda Trust who runs the attractions said: “Opening during the winter has been very important for us this year and we are delighted that people are reporting back so positively on TripAdvisor.

“We are constantly striving to improve the visitor experience at Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum, including introducing some exciting new discoveries, which I hope will keep us in those top spots in the reviews.”

From now until the 10th February 2013, the sites will be open every weekend from 10am to 4pm so that visitors can enjoy both attractions. At Vindolanda expert guides will be on hand to provide visitors with a one hour tour of the site – giving an in-depth insight into the lives of the Romans who lived there. The sites will then be fully open – 7 days a week – from Saturday 16th February.

Discover what clothes the Romans wore and why, relive the deep dark secrets of their lives, discovered during excavations at Vindolanda thousands of years later and witness where the excavations are on-going today.

Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum offer a full day out – with lots of inside spaces, so ideal during the bad weather and the Roman Army Museum is ideal for the less mobile visitor. Visitors are encouraged to buy a joint site ticket to get a maximum 20% discount value from your visit. This provides entrance to both sites which are only 15 minutes apart and offer completely different Roman experiences.

The Vindolanda Trust receives no public funding, so uses the entrance fee to keep the Trust digging!
