Pure Gym pumps up at Town Centre Securities’ New Front Leeds development

Yorkshire company Pure Gym, which claims to be the UK’s leading provider of affordable “no contract and no catch” fitness, has announced it will open a second gym in Leeds.

The venue is part of Town Centre Securities’ (TCS) New Front scheme at the Merrion Centre in the Arena Quarter. Opening in early Autumn, the Leeds City Centre North Gym is spread over 21,000 sq ft, and will create up to 15 new jobs for local people.

Pure Gym’s new site will give members access to a vibrant and spacious facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will be filled with over 220 pieces of the latest gym equipment to cover everyone’s fitness requirements and will offer over 40 free classes per week, plus additional specialist classes such as Zumba and the new South African dance class Bokwa.

The New Front scheme will be a leisure destination with bars, cafes, restaurants and gym along Merrion Way and Wade Lane. The development also includes public realm works that will allow for an outdoor area with continental–style street café seating. It also incorporates the 1,000 space multi-storey car park operated by Town Centre Car Parks, which will undergo a complete refurbishment and upgrade, creating convenient upscale parking services for shoppers, visitors and Arena users.

Helen Green, Associate Director of Estates for Town Centre Securities PLC said: “To have Pure Gym as the anchor tenant for the scheme is fantastic, not only because it is the leading value gym operator in the UK but also because its headquarters is here in Leeds.

“It will help define New Front. Located literally across the road from the First Direct Arena, the 80,000 sq ft destination will provide the most convenient dining, leisure and car parking facilities for Arena visitors. With this in mind we’re creating a retail offer that suits every age and pocket.

“There will be a mix of small independent local businesses together with a handful of well-known trusted brands. The Pan-Asian buffet restaurant chain, COSMO, will open later this year and our existing tenant, 1st Bowl, will be getting a new fit out. We hope to announce several more tenants in the coming weeks.”

Describing the new development, Pure Gym property director, Angela Crawshaw, said: “Our Leeds City Centre North site will provide local residents with a fully equipped gym that offers not only exceptional value for money at an affordable price, but membership without a contract that ties people in for long periods”.

Leeds-based commercial law firm, Shulmans acted on behalf of TCS. BDP’s Manchester Studio has been appointed as architects on the development and Savills and Central Retail, both of Leeds are the agents acting for TCS on the New Front scheme.
