Where's the exporting consistency?
The UK’s trade deficit almost more than doubled in July, figures from the ONS indicate. The deficit of trade in goods and services was £3.1bn, up from £1.3bn the previous month.
So what does this mean for the Government’s insatiable appetite for exporting activity? Whitehall has been talking up the export economy for a while now, and emerging markets are touted as the UK’s ticket out of decline.
In the first half of this year, the UK experienced GDP-boosting net trade and the ONS advise that trade statistics can be erratic. But, surely an export-led recovery will require more consistency for it to be anything other than an additional tool in the fight-back?
