Tennis tournament serves up work opportunities

Forty unemployed Liverpool residents have netted the chance to find work – thanks to the Liverpool Tennis tournament.

The city council teamed up with the tournament organisers, Controlled Event Solutions (CES) - who provided security services at the event – and the Liverpool Veterans Projects to train the residents in stewarding. The programme was supported by Liverpool in Work.

All those who were recruited achieved NVQs in stewarding helping them to find work at other events. People from the project have worked at ACC Liverpool, Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs, and Chester and Carlisle racecourses.

An awards ceremony was held at the Town Hall at which certificates were presented to those who gained the NVQ.

Councillor Nick Small, cabinet member for skills, enterprise and employment, said: “Not only was the Tennis Tournament a great sports success for the city but it has opened the way for unemployed people obtain jobs.

“Through a partnership between ourselves, the tournament’s organisers and CES we have helped previously unemployed people get qualifications. This means they did not just find work for the duration of the tournament but have been able to work at other events.

“It shows the importance of helping people gain qualifications.”
