Do you need to improve? Take a time out first

When you feel lost in your business, when it isn’t working out the way that you want it to, it might be time to take a ‘time out’. Rather than grabbing the first book off the shelf in the bookstore, or turning to others for help, the answers may already be at your fingertips.

There is probably no one who knows your business (or your part of your business) better than you. The issues that you face, the opportunities that lie before you, are just waiting to be written down and planned for. In the hustle and bustle of the working day these ideas and issues float beneath the surface. Taking a time out, even just a few minutes, can let you gather your thoughts.

Knowing the benefit, the payback, of solving your problems (or taking advantage of your opportunities) is essential. Very rarely does a plan of action yield precise results. There are often setbacks to contend with and unexpected results. Of course, the better the planning and the more information you have about a situation, the closer your plans will be to your designed outcome. Knowing the benefits can help you to see your plans through until the end, allowing you to realise the benefits, especially when the going gets tough.

Stepping out of the business’ chaos for even a short while can let you dream up new ideas to improve your business. I have never failed to meet anyone who didn’t have some kind of action plan at their fingertips if given the chance to pull their thoughts together first. This also means that your staff can contribute, if also given a few minutes to gather their thoughts.

Stopping what you are doing is often one of the best ways to get improvements identified and initiated. The motivation to see the improvements through is often linked to the rewards on offer, and getting your team involved has numerous benefits for you and them. Without any real structure you can get a great deal of improvement work done before you need additional ideas and input. Do your homework first, you may have more ideas at your fingertips than you think!
