Northumbria Police call time on North Shields pub

A North Shields pub, The Tun, is to be closed following a police application putting forward a case at North Tyneside Magistrates’ on Saturday morning.

It follows reports of assaults and disorder at and outside the Church Way establishment over recent months.

Magistrates upheld the case and the premises have been closed pending a future licensing review on October 15.

This is the first time the area command has used a closure order of this kind.

North Tyneside Area Command’s chief inspector, Steve Readdie, said: “The vast majority of pubs and clubs in North Tyneside are well run and we have a good relationship with licensees.

“Where there are increased levels of violent offences, which of course is unacceptable, we will take action.

“Licensees have a key role to play in our communities ensuring their premises are responsibly managed, any impact on the local people from their establishment is minimised and crime and disorder prevented.

“We will continue to work with our partners to take action against those premises causing the most concern in our communities.”
