£225k revamp of Carlisle city centre given green light
The £225k revamp for part of the city centre in Carlisle has been given thegreen light.
Plans include a new £50k bandstand in the Green Market and improving the signage on all major routes into the city.
Tourism is a major industry for Carlisle with 7m visitors recorded in 2013, the hope is that the improvements will significantly increase this.
Within the Carlisle District Local Plan, Carlisle Council said: “It is essential that the tourism potential of the District is promoted and exploited to maximise the benefits it can bring to the area, including a large number of jobs. “Carlisle’s heritage is central to its attractiveness as a tourist location with Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site and National Trail crossing the District, Carlisle Castle, the Cathedral, Tullie House museum and many more attractions attracting visitors in their own right.”
Carlisle airport is also undergoing a revamp withStobart Grouphoping to have the work done by September 2015.
