Tyneside retail startups boosted by new ‘pop up shop’

A new pop up shop in North Shields’ town centre has been established to provide boost to new businesses, following support from North Tyneside Council.

The shop, based in the former Connexions Centre, will soon be home to a range of retailers who are looking to take their businesses on to the high street for the very first time.

The unit which is now complete has space for up to four individual traders and with below market rent and no lengthy contracts, the pop up shop provides the perfect springboard for start-ups to test the water before committing to a more permanent high street presence.

Paul Buie, Head of Business and Economic Development at North Tyneside Council said: “Pop up retail space provides a great entry point for start-ups, not only is it a cost-effective way to get a foot on to the high street but it also provides a great opportunity to work with other like-minded business owners too, who can support each other and pass on custom, which for a new venture is invaluable.

“The unit we have created here in North Shields has been designed to be eye catching for customers and ready for retailers to move straight in to and would lend itself perfectly for people seeking a small space at reduced cost.

“We have already received interest from fashion retailers and a nail bar, so anyone interested in seeing the space is urged to come forward before it is too late.

“We are committed to supporting our local high streets and helping to breathe new life into them by supporting both our existing traders but also helping others to take their first tentative steps in to retail.

“Pop up shops are just one initiative the council is developing to encourage growth across our town centre, ensuring they remain a special and vibrant place, filled with a healthy mix of small, independents together with the national chains.”
