£5m Scarborough care home to create 50 new jobs

A new £5m care home, due open in Scarborough in autumn next year (2016), will create more than 50 new nursing and administration jobs.

Construction work will commence this autumn on the 64-bed care home in Barrowcliff, which will be known as Maple Court and is a new venture by one of East Yorkshire’s most experienced independent care home operators.

Corporate finance partner at North Yorkshire accounts and business advisers, JWP Creers Tony Farmer and corporate finance manager, Nick Barker, provided business, corporate finance and taxation advice to established Maple Court.

Their work included sourcing and raising finance and advising on the business structure and forward planning. Legal work was by head of the Real Estate Department at Andrew Jackson Solicitors, York, Richard Mays and corporate partner, Nick Scott.

Yorkshire Bank provided a £2.9m development loan to part fund the construction of the new care home for which Scarborough construction company, Appledorn Developments Ltd has been appointed main contractor. The deal was agreed through Yorkshire Bank’s Business and Private Banking Centre in York.

Maple Court is the latest care home to be run by businessman Tony Gray who set up the 107-bed Manor House Nursing Home, Stamford Bridge, in 1984 when Tony Farmer helped him to raise funds and acquire and refurbish the derelict premises.

Tony Farmer and JWP Creers also helped Tony Gray sell that business and an associated a homecare service caring for 100 clients in their own homes in North and East Yorkshire, to national healthcare provider, Barchester Healthcare, in November 2005.

Tony Gray said: “An aging population means that there is a growing need for very high-quality facilities and top-quality nursing staff run by experienced operators. This is one reason why I have decided to re-enter this sector and have chosen Scarborough to launch this new home.

“My working association with Tony Farmer in establishing, developing and selling care homes goes back more than 30 years and we have once again had the top-class advice and attention to details for which he and his team is known.”

Tony Farmer added: “Tony Gray is a businessman with a very good understanding of what makes care homes successful and he creates wonderful facilities where residents and their families are relaxed and happy.

“We are very pleased to be working with him on this latest venture and believe that it is very good that Scarborough has been selected as the location as the town still has a great deal to offer. We hope that this will be a catalyst for further investment there.”

Brian De Vere, relationship manager at Yorkshire Bank’s Business and Private Banking Centre in York, also commented: “Tony Gray is a very experienced operator who has worked in the care sector for many years. Not only is Tony well respected in the industry but he also strives to provide the very best of care for residents.

“An ageing population has seen a rise in demand for care homes and it’s a sector that Yorkshire Bank is keen to support.”

Howard Rogers, Appledorn Developments ltd managing director, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed for this prestigious scheme and are working with Tony Gray to create a facility which the town will be proud of.”

JWP Creers, based at Park Street, Selby and York Science Park, York, is among York and North Yorkshire’s largest firms of accountants, taxation professionals and business advisers with eight partners and more than 70 staff.
