Liverpool’s cruise industry set for record year in 2016

Liverpool’s status as a cruise hub continues to grow as it prepares to host to a record number of ships next year.

In 2016, Liverpool Cruise Terminal will welcome 64 ships, 10 more than in 2015, and boost the local economy by bringing 85k passengers to the city.

The cruise industry has contributed £7m to Liverpool’s economy this year, with 81k visitors and 37k crew members arriving in the city. Each passenger spent an average of £70 locally, while crew members spent £30.

Liverpool’s Assistant Mayor Cllr Wendy Simon, who is the council’s cabinet member for culture, tourism and events, said: “Over the last decade the city has experienced a remarkable cultural and economic renaissance which, combined with our famed hospitality, makes Liverpool a firm favourite with visitors from around the world.

“I’m delighted that once again, our cruise offering has increased and we look forward to welcoming thousands more people who will be able to see for themselves why Liverpool has such a fantastic reputation.”

The city’s 2016 cruise schedule includes five inaugural visits and the return of Seven Seas Voyager, which was the first ship to call into Liverpool Cruise Terminal when it was constructed in 2007.

The terminal’s cruise and operations manager, Angie Redhead, commented: “Liverpool Cruise Terminal welcomes the world to the heart of our city.

“We have a fantastic citywide support network behind our cruise operation, a wealth of things to see and do in the region, award-winning attractions just a short walk away and a dedicated team of people ensuring every passenger has a great experience.”

She continued: “When you combine all of these elements together, Liverpool’s appeal to the international passenger is unbeatable.”
