'Local Escapism' on the rise in Manchester

“Local Escapism” is becoming an increasingly significant feature of Manchester’s leisure landscape.

In fact, one of the fastest growing groups targeting Manchester as an overnight destination is those living less than 15 miles away, from the city centre, according to the popular Macdonald Manchester Hotel & Spa.

In less than a year, the hotel team has seen a 10% rise in ‘local escapism’, with an increasing number of local people checking-in for an overnight stay and spa break, despite being within a reasonable taxi ride from home.

Paul Bayliss, General Manager at Macdonald Manchester Hotel & Spa, commented: “Since the start of this year, we’ve seen a surge in bookings from local people who want to escape their day-to-day responsibilities and just spoil themselves with a touch of luxury.

“Our local guests already know Manchester and all it has to offer in terms of shopping, culture and world-class sports events. They choose Macdonald Manchester Hotel & Spa because it’s ideally situated and they can make the most of our state of the art spa facilities, top quality but never stuffy dining and the best sleep in the city.”

The rise of ‘local escapism’ is evidence of a boost in consumer confidence, as the recession is consigned to the past, once and for all.

Paul continued: “We’ve also seen a rise in people spending the night after an evening out in the city centre. Instead of coming into town in the evening and taking a taxi back to the suburbs afterwards, an increasing number of Mancunians are arriving early to enjoy afternoon tea or to take full advantage of the spa before their night out.

“People work hard and long hours so many are awarding themselves treats between holiday periods and it’s our pleasure to look after them.”

In response to rising demand, Macdonald Manchester Hotel & Spa has launched a new ‘Local Escapes’ package, designed to encourage people to get away from it all when they need to, and treat themselves for the night.

Commenting on the package, Paul said: “People are so busy these days that it can be hard to find time to get away, so it’s important to do it properly when you can. That’s why we’ve created this package to be a one stop shop for local people who need a break. Our fantastic facilities are all included in the package, and our dedicated staff will be on hand to take care of everything, so our guests can switch off and really enjoy themselves.”

Guests who purchase the ‘Local Escapes’ package will be greeted in their room by a bottle of bubbly and – if the occasion calls for it – a birthday cake on the table, or rose petals on the bed.

A delicious Afternoon Tea is followed by a dual massage in the spa and complimentary use of the relaxation and thermal suite. Then it’s a three-course dinner for those who love taste and quality food in the Scottish Steakhouse Restaurant and up to the room to relax and enjoy a fabulously comfortable sleep.

In the morning, there’s time for a Champagne Breakfast, either delivered by room service or enjoyed in the restaurant. A late checkout will ensure that guests return to the real world relaxed, refreshed and restored.
