The Marketors Congratulates its Liveryman, the Prime Minister
City of London, UK: 14 July 2016 –Liveryman Theresa May has been sworn in as the United Kingdom’s second female Prime Minster, succeeding David Cameron after he made his last appearance at the House of Commons for PM’s questions.
The Worshipful Company of Marketors (‘The Marketors’) is the 90th livery company of the City of London which ensures that marketing is utilised as a force for good by encouraging excellence in its education and practice.
Theresa May has been a member of the company for the past 17 years. She joined as a Freeman in 1999, gaining the Freedom of the City of London and becoming a Liveryman of the Company in 2001. At this time she was Conservative MP for Maidenhead which is a post she still holds.
Past Prime Ministers, including the likes of Winston Churchill, William Gladstone and Harold MacMillan, have been granted the title of honorary liveryman by various livery companies. Yet May’s business background in the City working at the Bank of England and the Association for Payment Clearing Services qualified her for membership before she got into full-time politics.
“We are delighted that our Liveryman, Theresa May, has achieved the high office of Prime Minister and we send her our heartiest congratulations” says David Pearson, Master of the Worshipful Company of Marketors. “She has always been a great supporter of the Company and made time from her busy schedule as Home Secretary to be the speaker at one of our formal dinners in the City in 2013.”
